When we talk about digestion, probiotics tend to get all the focus, but have you ever considered the role of prebiotics for your dachshund? Recently, I’ve learned just how significant prebiotics are for gut health—not just for humans, but for our adorable dachshunds too. Let’s take a closer look at what prebiotics are, why your dachshund needs them, and how to safely include them in their diet.
Why Do Dachshunds Need Prebiotics - and What Are They?
Prebiotics are a type of indigestible fibre that your dachshund’s body can’t break down - but their good gut bacteria can. These fibres feed the beneficial microbes living in the large intestines, helping them grow and thrive. Think of prebiotics as fertilisers for the probiotics in your dashies gut. Without prebiotics, those good bacteria struggle to survive. When well fed, these microbes support everything from digestion and nutrient absorption to immune health and mood - yes, even in dogs!!
How To Introduce Prebiotics and Probiotics Safely?
Adding “gut healthy” foods to your dog’s diet can be exciting once you understand their power, but it’s wise to proceed carefully. Introduce prebiotics and probiotics in moderation. When beneficial bacteria grow too quickly (a common effect of prebiotic-rich foods), it may lead to bloating, gas, stomach issues, or soft stools—especially in breeds like dachshunds that are prone to digestive sensitivity. A gradual introduction helps your dog’s gut adjust, minimising potential problems. Start with small amounts, observe how they react, and increase only if there are no negative effects.
Top Prebiotic Foods Loved by Dachshunds
Looking for easy, gentle ways to introduce prebiotic fibres to your dachshund’s diet? Here’s what to try:
🥕 Carrots
Whether raw or lightly steamed, carrots are a wonderful source of fibre and can even benefit dental health. Baby carrots are my go-to—they’re perfectly sized for our dashies.
🍌 Green (Unripe) Bananas
These bananas are rich in resistant starch, which serves as an effective prebiotic. A small piece is plenty!
🥦 Steamed Broccoli Stalks
When chopped and steamed, broccoli stalks provide excellent fibre. Stick to small servings to help avoid gas.
🍠 Cooked Sweet Potato
A fan favourite for good reason! Loaded with fibre and soothing for delicate stomachs, it’s a great addition for your dashie.
🌾 Chicory Root or Inulin
Commonly included in high-quality dog probiotic supplements, like the one I recommend. Start with a small amount and follow the package directions for dosing.
🍎 Apple (No Seeds)
An apple slice brings pectin, a prebiotic fibre, to your dog’s diet. Remember to remove the seeds and core. While raw apples do contain pectin, much of it is locked within the apple’s structure. Gently stewing the apple with water releases the pectin, making it easier for gut bacteria to access. If you have time, steaming apples before feeding them is a great option.

Kefir: A Digestive Aid for Dachshunds
Did you know you can share kefir with your dachshund? I make milk kefir at home for Maple and use it in her meals, bake treats with it, or even serve it plain. Kefir is a natural source of probiotics that can support gut health and digestion. I aim to include a probiotic food with every meal Maple eats. Both prebiotics and probiotics work best when given regularly. If making kefir isn’t for you, consider using this probiotic supplement that I recommend. It combines prebiotics and probiotics for a convenient solution to support your dachshund’s digestive health.

Final Tips for Supporting Your Dachshund's Gut Health
When adjusting your dog’s diet, taking it slow is essential. Even healthy additions can create discomfort if introduced too rapidly. Start with modest portions, remain consistent, and track your dachshund’s response. For dogs with sensitive stomachs or health conditions, consulting your vet before trying new foods or supplements is a must.
