If you are lucky enough to have a dachshund in your life, you know they bring endless laughter. But they also come with a flair of digestive drama. My own dachshund, Maple, has shown me firsthand how crucial it is to find the right balance when it comes to keeping her tummy happy. And no, her adorable begging doesn't help!

From chomping on grass as if it's a delicacy to staging dramatic hunger strikes, dachshunds know how to keep you guessing. But don't worry - with the right care, your little one's stomach can feel a lot better.

Why Dachshunds Have Stomach Problems

Here are a few reasons why dachshunds are prone to stomach issues:

Genetics: Many doxies are sensitive to common ingredients like chicken, grains, or dairy

Tiny Dog Syndrome: Small pups like dachshunds are more affected by small changes in their diet

Breed-Specific Issues: Dachshunds are more likely to deal with conditions like pancreatitis, which is often related to fatty foods. According to the American Kennel Club, small breeds like dachshunds are particularly at risk.

Snack Persuasion Tactics: They're professionals at getting extra snacks with those puppy eyes. Too bad their tummies can't always handle the spoils.

Signs of Digestive Issues in Dachshunds

Keep an eye out for these signs of stomach upset:

  • Loose stools (the less said about clean-ups, the better)

  • Gas that could make you reach for a gas mask

  • Skipping meals (surprising, but it happens)

  • Constant grass-eating during outdoor time

  • Vomiting or gagging spells

  • Persistent itching that seems more like a work out

If these symptoms persist, it's time to check in with your vet.

Maple's Stomach Story

When Maple was just a pup, I thought being a good dog parent meant unlimited treats. Big mistake! It led to some seriously rough nights. That's when I learned that her digestion needed much more thought and attention.

These days, I focus on her health with carefully selected foods and probiotics. The result? Maple's thriving. She's playful, energetic, happy, and those zoomies are back in full force.

How to Help a Dachshund with a Sensitive Stomach

These steps have worked wonders for Maple, and they could do the same for your little companion:

Slow and Steady Wins the Race: Always introduce new food gradually over a week or so

Quality over Quantity: Pick food with real ingredients, like meat, and avoid anything overly processed

Probiotics are Life: Adding a probiotic to her daily routine has made a big difference

Smaller Meals Work Wonders: Splitting meals into smaller portions helps avoid overload

Keep Treats Simple: Go for things like carrots or freeze-dried meat. Bonus points if they're small and gentle on digestion

Wrapping Things Up

Sure, dachshunds have sensitive tummies, but with patience and the right care, they'll thrive. Maple's progress has been an ongoing process, but her happy, wagging tail reminds me that every step is worth it. Remember: Take care of their stomach, and you'll have one happy dog!
